"Pluto is always good for a spectacular show (proof that it's really associated with Pisces -- it's a drama queen). The Core is mind blowing, it is barely understood and a truly deep metaphor for something in space, associated with us, that is "at the center of it all," meaning at the core of the psyche. In many ways, Pluto functions as the center of individual evolutionary growth; and the Core is a metaphor for something we all have in common, arguably the most collective symbol and point there is. In the depths of space, the Milky Way is our home, and with the Core, we're talking about the center of our little island."

I cannot wrap my head around Pluto and Pisces in association. What am I missing?

Hey there Mary,

Often these kinds of associations are intuitive. You're describing the connection not being intuitive, to you. Let's see if I can make a few associations that help. One is that Pluto crosses the orbit of Neptune. When a planet is an orbit crosser, it has some of the properties of the planet whose orbit it crosses. While Pluto is inside Neptune's orbit, Neptune is the furthest planet (by the old definition), and this has been the case for most of our lifetimes -- currently Pluto is outside Neptune's orbit, as of a few years ago.

A good example of a small planet taking the properties of another planet whose orbit it's near is Chiron, which many astrologers regard as being a bridge between matter and energy; this comes from the idea that Chiron crosses Saturn's orbit and spends some years as an inner planet; then it extends out later in the cycle toward the orbit of Uranus (but does not cross that orbit).

With a little observation, it's pretty easy to see that Chiron acts sometimes like Saturn, sometimes like Uranus and sometimes like both at once. It is the integration point of these two energies; and thus of Capricorn and Aquarius. This does not necessarily make things any more clear or intuitive with Pluto, but it's an example of how a minor planet can take on the properties of the larger planets whose orbits it crosses or in the case of Chiron and Uranus, approaches.

As for Pluto. Intuitively we have pretty much agreed this is an archetype of The Edge, The End, and/or The Inevitable. These are Pisces enough themes (Pisces being the sign of The End, the Last Sign in the Great Cycle). While Scorpio/8th house is generally the archetype given as the ruler of death/regeneration in Western astrology, Pisces and the 12th represent the end of an incarnational cycle...endings in general...and many find associations betweent the 12th, death and overwhelming changes. Pisces also takes you deep, and it is the primordial ocean from which all life (in our current world mythology) arises; it is the actual, physical regeneration area of the planet.

And that all sounds a lot like how people expeience Pluto. Pluto is also associated with all things incomprehensibly large and/or populous, and Pisces has this property as well.

There is also a sex connection, because while we tend to have sex hung up in the 8th in Western astrology, in Vedic the 12th is about "pleasures of the bed," the deepest bliss, having nothing to do with attachment (indeed, a kind of total detachment) and we all know those Pisces people...and the effect they can have...

Pluto can bring many of these experiences. It's just more intense than we think of Pisces as being -- kind of like Chiron, which has an obvious Virgo connection, is more intense than we think of Virgos as being. In this vein, Chiron and Pluto function quite well as a polarity of energies: one more conscious, one working deeper down. I mean, Pluto can be a deep and subtle energy. It's just a bit more focused than Neptune, a bit more honed do an edge. But still manages to be subtle or invisible in a distinctly Piscean kind of way.

Does any of that help?
