Dear ASR,

I have noticed over the years that a lot of people get quite strange and irritable for about a month or so before their birthdays.  Does astrology have an answer for this.

Thanks,

Ian

Dear Ian,

You are not alone in experiencing pre-birthday strangeness and irritablity. I have felt it in me and people close to me as a heavy-duty, taking-stock, serious kind of time. Astrology does have an an answer to some of this.

One month before a birthday there is an aspect which occurs, transiting Sun making a closing semi-sextile to the natal Sun. A semi-sextile is a 30 degree aspect and its energy is discriminating, detecting, distinquishing. A closing aspect is one that has to do with finishing and summing things up. This all sounds pretty judgemental I think. My impression is the last 2 weeks are the strongest of the tension, a great big review and re-evaluation. Basically we ask, Am I okay?

Then as the days go on the tension mounts toward a conjunction of transiting Sun with the natal Sun, commonly happening on the birthday plus or minus a day. This is a day when people may feel a yearning to shine like the Sun, be appreciated and noticed.

My birthday is months away now, but for this year, I think I'll start a list of successes I have had, no matter how small and keep it around for that 30 days

Hello Ian,

I will add that the month previous to our birthday the Sun is transiting our solar 12th house.

This is a bit of the closet of the horoscope. The place where subsconscious patterns are stored; it has a 'behind the curtain' feeling to it. So when the Sun makes it's annual transit here, it brings some 'light' and consciousness to a place that is more about the hidden and the invisible. The feeling of uneasiness has to do with being so 'close' (the Sun is our core) to what is usually so 'far away'... i hope my image comes throught.

The solar 12th house is also that place and frame in time where the Sun was located just before we were born. There is latent quality of waiting in the dark, ready to be born, that can be very exiting, but also full of tension. So there is a prenatal memory that subtly reenacts itself each year. We don't think enough about this prebirth energy... and i think once a year we have the opportunity, even on a subconscious level ,to go back a little, so we can feel the energy of life when the Sun conjuncts our natal Sun.

Hey Ian, I think some people get cranky because they start to think about being a year older. It's a clear marker of the passage of time. If a person doesn't feel like they've got much to show for that particular trip around the Sun, it can be frustrating. It's the perfect time for those nagging questions to pop up in your head...Why didn't I take that class I was thinking about? Or start that vegetable garden? Is that really a wrinkle inside of a wrinkle on my forehead? Did I make a good choice when I spent all of my tax return on a framed and autographed photo of William Shatner?
